This Weeks Guest: Dr. Kristin Keim
Sports psychology seems frivolous in some circles but it is essential in cycling. The sport is very much a mental as well as physical game that relies on the balance and health of each other. Dr. Kristin Keim is here to explain it all and break it down. She has extensive experience in guiding and helping world class athletes reach their optimum levels and then, she is there to guide them and evaluate the highs and the lows. She explains how on some level many athletes are obsessive to the point of having an unhealthy relationship with training diet and other aspects of their life. Also she gives riders tools with real life coping strategies with how to handle victory as well as defeat.
Many riders go into a funk and even a depression when experiencing a high such as the olympic games or the Tour de France. They don’t know how to deal with the aftermath of adjusting to everyday life. Kristin Keim has helped prepare many cyclists at the highest levels of the sport to take a real holistic look at their mental health. Most people realize that cycling is a mentally tough sport that requires an ability to handle stress loads on a daily basis. Kristin understand this and helps people cope, vent and improve their mental state.
A former competitive cyclist herself at a very high level, she has lived in Northern California, Boulder Colorado and North Carolina. She has slowly built up her practice into Keim Performance consulting. She teaches riders everything from deep breathing, relaxing and mediation techniques to overtraining and burnout, retirement and motivation. Things like depression in athletes is not uncommon and Kristin has identified some of the sign and triggers that may lead to a cyclists having mental issues. She is overwhelmingly down to earth and has a relaxing demeanor that will put any rider at ease. In a world of a lot of pop psychology and self proclaimed life coaches learning to make money fast, she is a breath of fresh air that makes people believe that the mental aspect of cycling is just as important is the training, recovery and nutrition. This is an episode that cyclists of all abilities can take from and learn to really think about how they approach cycling on and off the bike. You won’t want to miss this!
