This Weeks Guest: Coryn Rivera
Orange County’s Coryn Rivera is someone who started competitive cycling at an early age. Coryn started at the tender age of 9 and has been winning ever since. She holds the distinct honor of having over 70 national titles. Her achievements are on the road, track, mountain bike and cyclocross disciplines. She grew up riding with her father and out on rides going for every town sign or marker against many of her more experienced friends. While she was a teenager she was already riding with the pro’s and giving them something to chase when it came down to the last few hundred meters of the race. When asked whether she gets intimidated in races by some of the more experienced stars of the sport, her focus is unwavering. She is ready to take on most challenges because of her tremendous belief in herself.
Coryn Recounts racing at Nature Valley Grand Prix as a 16 year old against some of the countries best. Keep in mind, she is still racing on Junior gears which does not allow her to really push the big gears. She has to rely on her leg speed in order to keep up with some who are pedaling at a much lower cadence. That is a quality of people who are used to achieving results and who do not become phased by impending challenges.
Coryn made the smart move of going to college rather than racing pro straight from high school. She attended a small Catholic college at Marian University. It happens to be a powerhouse in the world of cycling typically being on the podium at every collegiate national championship. While racing for Marian, she has mentored other students in cycling while winning another national championship. Coryn also has the distinct position of racing 2015 Richmond Virginia worlds course as a collegiate athlete and then representing the United States in the Elite World Championship. Coryn is someone who has a gift for sprinting. She has won the 2014 National Criterium Championships and has raced for the top domestic squad United Health Care. For 2017, she is at the sports highest level moving to Europe and racing for team Sunweb formerly of Giant Alpecin. We wish Coryn luck in the upcoming season.
